Looting Tips

Just a few simple tips when you're learning the game.

When hunting, try to drop the crits on a hex that already has loot on it. You can stand on a pile you want to loot and let the crits come to you so you can drop em there. Then when you are ready to loot, you save time and don't have to search and re-search the hexes. This is especially handy for ments or players with Transmute twigs who can pop piles when the hex gets REALLY loaded with loot.

Be sure to check the black helms with neck protection. Some have special powers on them when they glow. They will give you between 20 - 40 Hits, or 20-40 eps when worn. The ones in KM do not glow and can go as high as 50. The Glow part of the helm is a small version of combat stun protection. I know a lot of people with bigger characters who will not wear the KM Helms because of the Stun Protection that the smaller helms give.

Check leather rings, some have special abilities. This includes the mini-uzies (+ ep regen when worn), Illusion spells (for you to cast when worn) or Stat rings (+'s to stats when worn). But be warned before you go off in search of the Stat rings, only 1 in every 100 or so is magical. I know I have gone down to -7, and killed the Red Dragon (after he had feasted on alot of NPC's) and brought all the rings up to the store keeper to have them checked to see if they were magical, 4 of them were. And there were 136 rings that I went through!!

I have seen rings from +1 will, agi, chr, str, int, wis. I have not yet seen a + con ring. And there is only one ring that I know of that gives bonus to luck, that being found in Aleria. Have also seen +1 move rings, +10 hit rings, +8 ep rings. Now you must decide if this ring is what you want to wear. It is my opinion that a +4 defense ring is better then a +1 stat ring of any type during combat.

Wear Chr rings when buying hits, and wear your characters major stat (Wis - Hlr, Int - Ment, Str - fighter) ring when resting up levels to get better stat gains.

There are several ways to check these rings:

First way and easiest, but not very accurate.
You can sense the ring. If it glows it is magical, BUT some magic rings do not glow. I have a +2 Str ring and Shar has a +2 Int ring and a level 10 Illusion ring that do not glow.

Second way takes a little more time than the first but is a little more accurate.
Look at your stats and write them down (type 'list stats').
Take one of your rings off and put on the leather rings and compare the stats. See if any of them went up. Also If you are a spell caster, you can cast a large EP spell, like Protice, and check your EP regain rate. (Shar likes this method.)

Third way and most accurate (especially if you are not a spell caster).
Put all the rings you find in your sack.
Place all the rings on the counter of the store.
Type "Dar, appraise ring" (if Dar is the shop keeper)
if the ring is worth 5 gold, it is non-magical, if it is worth more then 5 coins it is magical. This is the best way to look for rings. You might not always know what a ring does but this will tell you if it is magical.
