Fighter/Mentalist

I like playing a FM but it is a long term commitment. There seems to be more drawbacks than benefits.

To become an FM you can dedicate directly at the trainer South West of Frore. He is kind of isolated but not hard to get to. You can climb up to the hill giant, but go south of the stairs and jump off the cliff. You need a succor twig set to get back out though.  If you are already a Mentalist, you can get to and from his hideaway using ILLUSION. There are barriers in the water that you can FORM ILLUSION BRIDGE WEST to over come. You can dedicate to FM from Merchant, Mentalist, or Fighter, but I don't know if you can dedicate from Paladin. You cannot become a Barbarian or Paladin once you dedicate to Fighter / Mentalis.  I would (but didn't) wait until you are a high skill Mentalist with maximum eps before you dedicate to FM. I dedicated when I was lower level, and my maximum eps, via perm ep pots, was 200. I believe a Mentalist can max at 250.

It doesn't take away any eps when you dedicate. The other thing to consider is the Mentalist skill gain for a FM is about half of what a Mentalist gains. Weapon skills seems to be Normal, but I believe it may be related to the type of weapons you choose. I have skilled up to skill 12 in Martial arts, Thrown weapons, Axe, Bow, and Staff. I have skill up to skill 14 in Long Sword and all my weapons skill gain seem to be normal and the same speed in each of  these.

If you are just starting the game, and you think you want to become a Fighter/Mentalist,I would suggest that you start off as a Mentalist, (see Knowledge of the Mentalist). Skill your mentalist skill up as high as you feel like, I would suggest at least skill 15. You get most of your combat spells by then (see Spell Listing). Max your eps before you dedicate to Fighter / Mentalist.

I wear a Silver Griffon armor, 2 BNRs, a +2 agility ring and 5/5 ring from DT. I own Full Plate (which I can wear but it cuts my PSI casting level in half), Black dragon armor, Gold dragon armor, Silver dragon armor and Red dragon armor (not mama yet), but with my skill 12 Martial artist skill, I have the best protection with my silver griff and high agility.
I like the diversity that a FM give me. The only problems that I have encountered (besides level restrictions) is that I am
powerless against Stunners and Healers. They get me every time with that STUPID stun...<G> Most other crits I can stand up against pretty well, they just plain miss me most of the time. I don't take hardly any damage from PSI attacks (thanks to absorb), and not much damage from weapons with my combat abilities. I can Solo KM-4 if I am careful (and run from Stunners <G>). But in the Seldari forest I can take them all on with ease. The Seldar, I can't hit with a weapon yet, but
they go down easy with PSI. The Seldari don't get hurt much with PSI, but a weapon takes them out easily. I am only skill 15 in Ment, and I can solo Seldari -1 and -2 with little care. I can stand in the Bandit lord lair all day, but I can't hurt him <G>.  I solo Silver Griff , Red dragons, and even the Winter Wolf and do Betty quest with ease. FM can fight with a weapon as well as a fighter, and put Energyshield and Absorb on themselves. My hit point are fine, I think, at about 455 at Exp. level 20. But still the drawback is the tremendous amount of time you have to put in for skilling ment and weapon skills, and then coin for both of them.
